Charlestown is set to host it’s own weight loss and get healthy contest with a kick-off starting March 27th. The contest, called the Charlestown Get Fit and Healthy Contest is being hosted by Avalon Personal Training, LLC., located in the CharlestownCommerceCenter. Many local businesses, both inside and outside Charlestownare participating by being Point Award Hot Spots.
The contest will have four categories—most weight lost, most inches lost, highest decrease in body fat %, and most points earned. The most points earned category is garnering the most interest in the local business community as participants go around town collecting points by doing healthy things – many involving local businesses. This can be anything from ordering a pre-defined healthy meal from a local restaurant, taking a 2.9 Mile run around Charlestownto taking a yoga class at Charlestown Yoga. Participants receive a book when they register outlining the various activities and the points they are worth.
“We have created and highlighted a couple menu items specifically for the contest,” said Joey Lacey, owner of Jenny’s Pizza on Medford street. “Our 12" grilled pizza with grilled chicken, baby spinach, cherry tomatoes, and mozzarella cheese, is very low in fat and sodium and contains no hydrogenated oils.”
Ordering one of the six healthy meal options at Jenny’s such as the option above and getting a Jenny’s employee signature in your book earns you 10 points.
“I think this is a great idea that not only supports the business community but helps everyone by identifying some of the healthier things to do here in Charlestown. I am happy to have the Navy Yard Bistro participating and some of our menu items such as the Tuna Tartare appetizer with Asian Pears, Spicy Cucumbers, Tobiko Cavier and Asian Pear Vinaigrette are on the points award list,” said John Moore, owner of the Navy Yard Bistro and Wine Bar on 1st Avenue in Charlestown.
Other restaurants, such as Paolo's Trattoria have decided to create a new spring dish specifically for the contest. "It is a great way to introduce new, healthy flavors to the local community," said Adam Hawk, the owner of Paolo's Trattoria.
The contest has gotten the local business community involved in unique ways-- the 2.9 mile loop around Charlestowngoes by Olivia Browning in City Square. The Olivia Browning employees have volunteered to sign participant's Points Award books if they stop in the shop, verifying they were on the walk. This earns the contest participant an extra 10 points over and above what they would have earned for doing the walk without stopping in. "It not only gives people incentives to really do the walks," said Cori Di Donato, owner of Avalon Personal Training LLC and the event's organizer, but by providing interesting things to do while out walking or jogging we can help people stay motivated and involved during their cardio workouts.
Abby Gray, Owner of Olivia Browning, says that "not only will walkers get their ten points, they will get an opportunity to see an array of healthy gourmet items that we regularly stock, healthy cookbooks, and books and exercise decks that feature Yoga, walks around various world cities and more". Abby also added that their pet section has new collars and leashes to encourage folks to get out and walk their pet.
To register for the contest, there is a fee of $40 which covers contest materials. Would be participants can go to http://www.avalonpersonaltraining.com or call 617-580-3120.
“I am very happy that we were able to get this off the ground and get so many of the local businesses involved,” said Cori Di Donato. "Perhaps we can make this an annual event for the community."
